What does a failing brake line actually feel like before it lets go?
The classic warning is a soft or spongy pedal — one that sinks further than usual before the brakes bite, or that sinks slowly to the floor under steady pressure at a stop light. A brake warning light on the dash is the more obvious sign, and it means the fluid reservoir has dropped below the sensor, which only happens with an actual leak. Look under the car after it's been parked for an hour: brake fluid is usually clear to light amber and feels slightly oily, and a wet spot near a wheel or along the frame rail isn't something to wait out.
The dangerous version of this failure is the one with no warning at all — a line that's rusted paper-thin can burst under hard braking, and the first sign is the pedal going to the floor with no stopping power on that circuit. Most cars split the front and rear brakes into separate hydraulic circuits specifically so one line failing doesn't take out all four wheels at once, but a car doesn't stop the same way on two wheels as it does on four.
